Villa Carmignac – Exhibition 2024 – The Infinite Woman

The Fondation Carmignac presents the exhibition The Infinite Woman at the Villa Carmignac, on the island of Porquerolles, off the coast of Hyères (Var), curated by Alona Pardo. Strong, lascivious, fatal, nurturing, demonic, mythical, women have been represented in many ways over the centuries to suit a patriarchal vision of the world. Drawing from original myths to the most contemporary or subversive representations of the female body, The Infinite Woman proposes to shed new light on their emancipatory potential, from the reappropriation of desire to the elevation of disobedient bodies that upset Western conventions of beauty and power. Weaving together the stories of artists who, whatever their gender, have defied not only social norms, but also the limits of art and its oppressive categories, the exhibition unsettles and invites us to redefine femininity in art. From Sandro Botticelli to Judy Chicago, via Michael Armitage, John Currin, Loie Hollowell, Lisa Yuskavage, Lee Bul or Martine Gutierrez and Billie Zangewa, the exhibition combines major works from the Carmignac collection (Sandro Botticelli, Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein) with exceptional loans (Louise Bourgeois / Musée d'Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris, Mary Beth Edelson / TATE) as well as productions made specifically for the exhibition (France, France, USA). produced specifically for the exhibition (France-Lise McGurn).
